Opinion: Politics Without Ideology And Principles

$

“A great empire and little minds go ill – together.” The testament by Edmund Burke is signal and enduring. The danger of politics without defined ideology and principles of conduct has become grave and weighty in Nigeria under the present democratic dispensation. Nigerian politicians, patriots and statesmen, once revered for their pedigree, personal integrity and steadfastness in holding to right principles, are now in danger of extinction.  Treasured legacies with ennobling ideas in the making of true citizens and value-guided leaders are being swept into oblivion, putting this great country in dilemma.

With the corruption of democracy, the negative roles of political parties, and betrayal of trust by presumed leaders and fraudsters in practical politics, young Nigerians looking up to credible politicians as heroes and role model are in danger of passing through life without testing the promise, the dream, the shared vision, the creative imagination, the vigor, and the potency of a viable democratic society where the Nigerian dream is recognized and appreciated by all for the benefit of the citizenry and the largest swathe of the population. Thus, civic culture with high civic morale, civic sense of responsibility and empowerment for self-sustainable development is utterly wanting at the moment. The situation now is pathetic, sad. No guts, no glory! And it is personal integrity that gives credence to guts in every viable society where the tenets of democracy and canons of political faith are respected.

Today, the bizarre trend among elected Nigerian politicians is to decamp to the winning party without regard to party loyalty, political manifesto, or defined ideological position or principle. Some of the provocative and vexatious constitutional issues raised have become part of current legal problems yet to be resolved by the Supreme Court of Nigeria. The survival of the fittest as in the dreaded state of nature has become the norm with frightful forebodings for the future of democracy in this part of the world. Nobody cares anymore about the manifesto of a political party. And no politician is interested in participating in a most stimulating meeting of minds with engaging and refreshing candor. The Great Debate on the future of the country has appeared superfluous and irrelevant to the wielders of power who assume that it is no longer fashionable to talk about ideology with the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

But thinking people everywhere are keenly aware that ideology cannot be defined only with reference to the old notion of capitalism, communism or socialism. Welfarism, neo-welfarism, free commerce, creativity, innovation, social security and other concepts in the new global market of ideas cannot be overlooked or glossed over. A manifesto, in the same dynamic, must be understood as a declaration of plans and promises put forward by a political party and candidates who run for elective positions in the service of the people, keeping full faith and credit with the Constitution or fundamental law of the land. Power belongs the people as a sovereign nation under God. The basis of electoral mandate is clear in a civilised society.

Of course, the politics of carpet – crossing with the alignment and re-alignment of forces without regard to principles, ideology or party loyalty is not new in Nigeria. The notorious episode on the floor of the legislative house at Ibadan in 1952 is part of Nigerian history. That was the age of the revered founding fathers-the Azikiwes, the Awolowos, the Bellos, and the Balewas. The ugly trends and tendencies that followed in the constitutional history of Nigeria eventually overwhelmed the government and people with the tissue of calamitous follies and egregious blunders. Africa witnessed a fratricidal war that shocked the conscience of humanity, 1967-1970. The harrowing details of political in-fighting, intrigue and mischief are contained in many books and documentaries on Nigeria, highlighting the danger of unbridled corruption, ethno-religious conflict, and the fissiparous counter pulls of ethnic nationalism.

Today, while the global community is commending Nigeria for the apparent consolidation of her Democracy after 3 decades of military dictatorship, the government and people must continue to examine themselves with spiritual balance, the power of focus, objective self-analysis and honest appraisal.

Keen political observers have expressed shock and dismay at the way the new crop of Nigerian politicians without civic education ride rough-shod of the basic tenets of democracy and constitutionalism, the essential attribute of a government that observes and conforms to the dictates of a settled constitution. A report on the extremely alarming trend by some researchers and journalists working for the United Nations and the global media is most astonishing in it details. The documentary covers the saga in Imo state that led to the emergence of Ikedi Ohakim as the governor of the state and his defection and re-election bid on the perform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the ruling party at the centre. Included in the report also are the intriguing developments in the various states which led to the triumph of Governors Adams Oshimole, Olusegun Mimiko and others who were edged out of the political process by the iron-fisted political machine of PDP as the ruling party dictating the tempo, the tune and pace. Thus the policy of stultifying the aspirations of eligible aspirants was accepted as a norm within the socio – political matrix and power configuration. Here, the indices of power indicate that political gladiators do not command moral compass in their ways and means. The role of the judiciary has also become questionable.

The question is: Can Nigeria survive the new trend and tendency? How far can Nigeria cope with undemocratic attitudes and behavior that trigger violence, betrayal of trust, disservice and disharmony? It is not enough to talk about the holding of  free, fair and credible elections when the tenets of democracy and canons of political faith are jettisoned.

Certainly, a thoughtful reflection on politics, the challenge of democracy, and the import of the Nigerian Dream have become imperative. Great political thinkers share a consensus in both thought and practice: “The moral test of government is how it treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the aged; and those who are in the shadows of life, the sick, the needy and the handicapped” – Senator Hubert Humphrey.

What These Three Different Types Of Cufflinks Might Say About You

Sometimes, little things get overlooked; no one pays admirative attention to the house fly, except of course you aim to kill it. Most times, while admiring a well-suited man, we do so down to his spiffy shoes, and even though monitoring spirits could go as far as noticing the expensive looking wrist watch, attention is seldom paid to cufflinks… why?

Well, that might just be a question for the gods, however we know that cufflinks say a lot about a man. Here’s what we think…

Yarn Cufflinks

Yarn Cufflinks

These are the most affordable cufflinks you can get. To the ladies, this might spell C-H-E-A-P-S-K-A-T-E, though, what it clearly says about you is, you’re the man who cares less about something as minute as cufflinks – the bigger picture is all that matters to you.

Metal Cufflinks

Metal Cufflinks

This are the most popular ones, the bandwagon cufflinks. Being a class above the yarn cufflinks, they tell a different story. They show that you appreciate cufflinks as a fashionable accessory and not just for its obvious purpose.

Handcrafted Cufflinks

Handcrafted Cufflinks

These cufflinks are usually made from precious metals or pearls and most of the time possesses sentimental values. Men who wear these do so to make a statement, and not just a fashionable one, but also one that says, “I’m a bigger boss than Rick Ross”.

So guys, which cufflink are you?

Refresh on Sunday: Be An Instrument Of Peace

Life for everyone is full of ups and downs.

We often find that where goodness abounds, there also is evil lurking to sow confusion and hatred. This is the reason why we should always be aware of the overall environment we are in – mentally, physically and emotionally to ensure that the goodness is not overcome by evil.

In a similar vein, where evil abounds, there also is virtue lurking to sow harmony and peace. We should be attuned to our sensibilities to recognize the virtue that will bring about harmony and peace where evil abounds.

The tension between good and evil is everywhere we perpetrate one or the other. We should take control of our emotional and thought patterns and be perpetrators of good. The prayer of St. Francis of Assisi is apt –

“Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.

O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life.”

The destiny of the world is up to each of us.

Mahatma Gandhi’s principle of non-violence revolves around the concept that –

Peace is a more powerful weapon than war

A smile is more powerful than a sneer

A whisper is louder than a scream

The calm is in the eye of the storm

And total darkness recedes when a single candlelight glows.

Vox Pop: Phallus On The Go

Dangling penis huh? Yes or Nah…

When designers get into their creative zone, anything goes. During a recent men’s fashion week show in Milan, British designer, Vivienne Westwood, gave a show to remember. Not necessarily for the sartorial prowess the designer served, but because of the attention grabbing neckpiece the male models strutted the runway wearing.

Vivienne Westwood

Vivienne Westwood

Hopefully this isn’t an actual representation of their pintle size.

Our reaction here at pride was first a unanimous-cringe, then a high-pitched, emphatic NO!!! But of course, knowing what the world outside pride thinks is imperative, so we conducted a vox pop.

Folusho

Sure I can. No wait, is that a penis? Haba now, how can you ask me this. This is just embarrassing.

Tola

(Laughs).  I’m female, but I’d feel embarrassed if I see any guy wearing this.

Meckeh

God no!!! I don’t think any man can wear this beyond the runway. This oyibo people sef, they always come up with the darnedest of things.

Ngozi

I think a boob-necklace would be more fun. Everyone wants to see boobs, I doubt anyone wants to see a penis. It’s just not that appealing.

Olamide

What nonsense is this? I can only wear this if I’m given a billion dollars and a mansion. Even then, I’ll likely just walk out of my gate, no where far.

We conclude this is only for the bravest of men, but dare we say, even brave men choose their battles wisely.

The #BalmainArmy just got bigger and much more adorable, with Olivier sounding off his plans for a Balmain Kids collection. Rousteing who admitted to buying into the idea after designing and styling Kim and Kanye’s daughter, North, is putting the same fun as is in the adult collection (except the provocative ones, duh!), into the kids collection – so you get to ‘twin’ with your kids.

Advice Papa Gave Me: Some Food For Thought

$

My Son,

Here’s some food for thought.

  • In a high-end hand phone, 70% of the functions we never get to use.
  • In an expensive car, 70% of the speed and gadgets are just there for the heck of it.
  • If you own a luxurious villa or mansion, 70% of the space is usually not used or occupied.
  • If you have a wardrobe of clothes, 70% of them is not worn!

This is just an insignificant list of a whole load of things we do not need much of, or use much of, if we have them.

So, as we journey along in our life, what is important is to protect and make full use of the 30% that we really need and do use.

  • Drink more water, even if not thirsty.

  • Learn to let go, even if faced with grave problems.

  • Endeavour to give in, even if you are in the right.
  • Remain humble, even if you are very rich and powerful.
  • Learn to be contented, even if you are not rich.
  • Exercise your mind and body, even if you are very busy.
  • Make time for people you care about.
  • “Be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labours and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.” – Desiderat

My dear son, life is really short – live life to the fullest –
Enjoy.

Love you.

Dad.

2 Ways To Translate The Floor Length Jacket To Fit Our Blazing-Weather

$

Inasmuch as they expose themselves to the short-sighted scrutiny of the public, most celebrities are idols, with everyone scampering to look like them (and no, we don’t mean a weird and stalk-ish trip to the surgery table). In this case, we reference their style and our slight envy for their wardrobes.

When Kim Kardashian announced she was expecting another baby, the world, literally, fixated the spotlight on her 9 months journey. It was well worth our time and data, as the fashion mogul demonstrated why her style is craved by many. She spotted floor length jackets for the most part of her pregnancy, paired with fitted, figure-grabbing dresses.

Kim Kardashian

Let’s help you cop her floor length jacket style, while translating it perfectly to fit our humid weather.

Floor length kimono

Worn as a bikini cover up, the Kimono has transitioned effortlessly to earn its place on the street away from all the wetness. This makes it perfect for hot days, as it is made from very light fabric – chiffon. Rather than flowery accents, opt for plain, block colour, to expunge beachy-vibes.

Floor length Ankara

Care for a bit of African vibe? Grab an Ankara fabric, head to your tailor, and come out with a cheeky smile. Though we know tailors make our lives easier, but we here at pride are big on patronizing African fashion brands, check out the Malia dress-jacket by Dpipertwins.

Note, hot days shouldn’t hold you back from experimenting trends.

Not Every Girl Wants To Get Married – Yemi Alade

$

Yemi Alade is the cover star of Pride Magazine’s Celebration Edition 2016. Here is excerpts from the interview.

On the biggest misconception about her
The biggest misconception so far would be that I’m a mobile human bank (laughs). No, I think I’m a mobile human ATM, you just press some buttons and money just comes out like that. It’s crazy because even when your status changes, your standard of living would change, which means that they’ll be more bills, more debts and even when your career continues to rise and you start increasing your bars they’ll be more salaries to be paid, etc… when you try to expand. So there’s so much money going back into the business itself, and it’s a very capital intensive one. So there is hardly so much money to actually use and ‘flenjor’, most of the money goes into work. But people just think that they can’t dash me 5k again, if you give me, I’ll collect, I’ll be very grateful. I can’t remember when last anybody gave me money, like just take. But it’s all good; I thank God for using me to bless others as well.

On what makes her happy
Oh, food makes me happy that’s for sure, and money in my account makes me happy, I like to see the zeros pile up, oh thank you Jesus! What makes me smile? Also when I go to different countries despite all my camouflaging, trying to make sure that I keep a low profile, then people would spot me out and start telling me sweet things, it’s amazing. Recently I saw a video on Instagram of a girl with her boyfriend and they actually created a routine to my song Johnny and turns out this girl is in her fourth stage of cancer and she’s battling it and the doctors had already told her that in 2013 she was going to die, but she’s still alive, she’s been using traditional methods to sustain herself and she’s alive, she’s bubbly and if you check her Instagram you would not believe that she actually has cancer, she’s so inspiring. God bless her

And more food
Well, I love Egusi, I love Uha. Those are definitely Yoruba and Igbo meals. But other than that, I love edikaikong, I just love it. I love vegetables.

About Marriage
Every girl who wants to get married should get married. Not every girl wants to get married in case you guys don’t know. Marriage is an institution meant for those who are ready. Some people are not ready, some people cannot stand the heat, and I personally think that you should go for what makes you happy not what makes society happy. So not every girl should get married; only the girls that want to get married should get married.

And Johnny
No, Mr. Johnny hasn’t been found. That guy is lost, probably forever, I don’t know, let’s just stay hopeful.

There’s definitely no love lost on twitter streets this year.

This year began with celebrities hauling brick-words at each other, or in some cases, just one party doing the hauling (we spot you egbon Olamide). Unfortunately these online altercations haven’t dissipated just yet, so we’ll just hold on to our popcorn and drinks.

Yesterday, Kanye West went in on Wiz Khalifa for using his wife’s initials, KK, which unknown to him carried a more illegal meaning. We nonetheless are more concerned with Kanye confessing to liking Khalifa’s pants.

Our curiosity took a toll on us and we sort to find out why Ye was such a huge fan of his pants… we didn’t come up empty.

Awards Don’t Validate You as an Artiste – Brymo

$

Olawale Brymo in his cover interview for ManPride magazine talks about his choices, being a dad, education and whole lot more.

Enjoy the excerpts below:

About his childhood
I learnt pretty much everything from my dad, especially his principles and how he sees life. How he treated people and things. However I failed to learn the trade, I would refuse when he would ask me to come to the workshop, I wanted to see the world. I needed to move away and satisfy certain urges I have inside. I am the kind who constantly drifts away from people and things when they lose their flair. I am still searching for understanding, in the world and in myself… Life as a carpenter’s son is pretty much what it is; I grew up knowing my dad to be a man of principles and understanding. I try to emulate that to help me improve myself.

About his soulful music
It wasn’t always like that, and many people still remember the days when I made music mostly for the fun of it. At some point however it became imperative to give meaning to what I was doing, more because most artistes won’t do it. I wanted to be different even though I knew that everything exists and nothing has value, but while we are alive some things do have meaning in this reality… I am influenced by all of the greats, home and abroad. I spend most of my time digging up materials and digesting them.

About being tagged under-rated
I laugh…. It is the least hurtful thing that has been said about me in the last few years. I have and still only pay attention to what I am doing, for those who care to patronize such. The rating system, if there’s any is also not so credible, so why bother?

About Education
Education is key, but school I am not very sure of. I have been and will always be a student of life, learning from my experiences. If I ever decide to go back to getting a degree it’ll be because of other ambitions that I am not decided on yet.

On being a dad
Parenting is an opportunity to build something from the very scratch, with the hope that you’ll be able to let go of it and let it be independent when the time comes. I like how it teaches responsibility and patience and all the other good stuff one needs to lead a peaceful life. Yes I do have that bond with my son, he’s particularly bright and restless, I like that… Lol

On awards
Awards were meant to be a means by which society decide who’s who in the business. It should reward artistry and commitment towards it… In recent times the line has been blurred between what’s artistic and what’s not, and most people in the award business are first business men before any other thing… No, awards don’t validate you as an artiste, not in this part of the world, not anymore. I’ll rephrase when things improve.
